PUTRAJAYA – Foreign workers recruitment for the plantation sector under the special exemption programme will be opened from 28 Jan onwards, Human Resources Minister M. Saravanan said.

Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) quoted him as saying online application for the recruitment could be made through the Foreign Workers Centralized Management System (FWCMS) website.

The Tapah member of Parliament also said application for foreign workers from other sectors, including the plantation sector without special exemption, would be opened from 15 Feb.

It was reported that the government had granted special approval to bring in 32,000 foreign workers through special exemption last September to ease the labour shortage in the plantation sector.

Last December, in the cabinet meeting, it was agreed upon to reopen foreign workers recruitment to sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, services, mining and quarrying, construction and domestic helpers.

Meanwhile, Saravanan reminded employers to adhere to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the Admission of Foreign Workers set by the government.

The MIC man said the SOPs were divided into four phases; pre-release, on arrival, after arrival (quarantine) and post-quarantine.

“All foreign workers are required to undergo quarantine for seven days during which they will be screened for Covid-19 twice and the cost borne by the employer,” he added.

He said all quarantine centres were in Klang Valley could accommodate up to 10,000 people at a time.

In this regard, he said, the ministry welcomed parties keen to offer facilities to be used as quarantine centres. – New Malaysia Herald
